Something
old, something new …..
Something old, something new, something blue and something borrowed
that is what the bride should wear.
In most times a jewelry is old, perhaps family jewels. It’s
kind of a connection to her old life – often to her family.
If the wedding dress is new; it’s said to be a promise
for a fortunate and successful life.
Blue is, according to the bible the color of purity and faithfulness
and is today often represented by a garter.
If the bride wears something borrowed – perhaps even of
another happy bride, she also will be fortunate and happy in
her own marriage.
The English original of this wisdom goes back to the victorian
time and reads:
“
Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue
and a silver sixpence in your shoe”.
In the German version the reference to the silver sixpence in
the shoe is missing and by this the symbol for prosperity. If
there is no silver coin available you can be content with a cent.
Anything more in the shoe would surely be uncomfortable.
